Mission Statement

We are dedicated to educating and empowering the public in the Greater New York region about energy, food, economics, media literacy and community building. We believe New Yorkers need to be able to make informed decisions about living sustainably and using local resources in an urban setting. We accomplish this by bringing a wide array of programs directly to local communities such as: conferences, seminars, workshops, film programs, panel discussions and town hall gatherings. We serve as the portal for the public to access information about sustainable living and to organizations with this focus. We plan to develop an urban demonstration site to showcase practices that fortify the soil, harvest energy, remediate stormwater, and produce food in small spaces.

Events
Informing New Yorkers about living sustainably in the city is a core function of L.E.S. We schedule three different types of events in order to accomplish this function:

Workshops
Our workshops include permaculture design courses and individual workshops on how to live more sustainably in the city. All ages are encouraged to attend and workshop fees are set at reasonable prices to accommodate different financial circumstances. View our current list of workshops.

Film Screenings
We maintain an extensive list of films on a wide array of topics such as:
food, energy, economics, democracy, and the environment. View our complete film list here. Following each screening we facilitate a lively, engaging and respectful discussion of the film and audience reactions. Film screenings are free and held in public venues. A modest donation is requested to defray the costs of travel and equipment upkeep. We are always looking for new venues, so please contact us if you can provide a location, blank wall, chairs, an electrical outlet, and an audience. We’ll supply the rest.

Presentations
L.E.S. can also make short presentations about topics such as energy depletion, urban sustainability, and economics to you and your class or civic group. These presentations are targeted for audiences from teens to senior citizens and are followed by a lively discussion.

We’d love to schedule an event for you and/or your group. Please contact us.
